Full Moon Creative Writing Workshop at the Red Rocks
Let the Bewitching Full Moon Inspire You…
For some, writing is a therapeutic exercise for the mind and soul; a way to creatively
express themselves. Others write because they feel they have “something to say.”
Whatever the reasons, all writers need a little inspiration now and then. And what
better inspiration than immersing yourself in nature, under the glow of the full
moon? Join us at Blackstar Canyon on August 6 at 6 p.m. for a three-hour writing
in nature program.
Writing in the natural surroundings of the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks is sure
to calm you, help you more fully appreciate the beauty around you, and perhaps inspire
you to pen something truly amazing. Experience the sights, sounds, smells and sensations
of the summer twilight and moonrise—a magical time in these sage-covered foothills—and
discover for yourself how inspiring writing in nature can be.
This program will start with a fun, introductory exercise to warm up everyone's
creative writing muscles. Next, participants will stroll over to the Red Rocks and
soak in the peace of the day as it slowly comes to an end, writing quietly until
the moon gradually rises over “Old Saddleback.”
The writing workshop will be led by Concordia University English Professor and IRC
Docent Thea Gavin, who enjoys writing about her favorite Orange County open spaces.
She hopes to encourage others to do the same by offering a variety of creative writing
workshops throughout the year in the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks. Thea’s long-term
goal is to collect the poems and stories provided by others who share her love and
passion for nature, and compile them as an anthology of Orange County nature writing.
Be sure to bring a chair or blanket, pen and paper, flashlight for the walk back
to the staging area – and, of course, your creativity. This activity is for adults
and children 16 and older. To sign up for this activity or others visit

Enjoy the Irvine Ranch Natural Landmarks during twilight.
